Dear Libertas Family and Friends,

Here we are in our third week of this new Libertas Christian School at-home learning experience. It certainly has been challenging for all of us and new opportunities are arising in improving our processes as we move forward.

However, we want to convey how very much your Libertas faculty, staff and administration appreciate your support, kind words of encouragement and your faithful efforts in bravely shouldering the mantle of education in your homes via partnership with us. We certainly miss you all very much, and we look forward to our being reunited in coming days – what a joyful event that will be in the Lord’s gracious timing!

In looking ahead, we anticipated that Governor Whitmer would cancel the remainder of the Michigan on-campus school year, which she has now done. However, Libertas leadership has determined that we will proceed in our current manner to complete our academic year. We want our students on-track for entering their next grade level in the Fall – we know you do as well. Our mission of “partnering with parents” is being lived out with new depth of meaning, for which we are sincerely grateful! Our God is faithful and is already ahead of us in his providential provision!

Earlier this week, Mrs. Wright emailed a “Rules of Engagement” to all parents, students and staff, which provides the guidelines and instructions for our conducting online/off-campus instruction. Please review it and keep it handy as it provides important guidelines for students under your parental oversight. The following points reiterate some of that content and adds a bit of clarification in certain areas. Please do contact me, Mrs. Wright, or Mrs. Steenwyk for helpful suggestions and insights – we certainly welcome your thoughts and support!

1. Online instruction will continue via posted assignments in both Facts Parents Web and Google Classroom. Parents – you will most likely be using Parents Web, where you can check grades and assignments. Students should primarily be using their Google Classroom accounts in interacting with their teachers and classmates academically. Pre-recorded instruction and live Zoom Help Sessions will continue, along with live Zoom classes. Instructors have communicated their specific method of delivering learning opportunities and resources. Lessons and homework will be posted by faculty by 8 am every Monday morning. Students need to meet homework deadlines per faculty instruction. Self-guided / independent coursework will be assigned to our students. Their teachers are just a quick text away via Google Classroom for questions. GC provides excellent opportunities for students and teachers to talk back and forth in real time.

2. Schedule of Classes: Mrs. Kaercher and Mrs. Wright are creating a grid schedule that will assist you and your students in following their class weekly class schedules. It will be emailed to you and your secondary students; the schedule will begin Monday, April 13th, after Spring Break.

3. Attendance: is being taken for live Zoom classes. Attendance is required unless a student is sick or unavailable per parent contact with the teacher. Students are to attend live Zoom classes, via webcam, even if it is via a smartphone (if a student’s computer does not have a webcam.) We want to see and hear our student participants, and frankly, the social interaction and fellowship blesses us all!

4. Homework/Assignments: All schoolwork needs to be turned in via Google Classroom, unless other arrangements are made with the teacher. Please encourage your student(s) to turn in work on time, i.e. meet assignment due dates.

5. Communication - Parents: please contact your student’s individual teachers for questions via faculty email, text messages or phone calls. All faculty and staff emails follow the following format: individual’s initial of their first name, their full last name with @libertaschristianschool.org. (no spaces, no comma)
Two exceptions: Bob Davis is [email protected] Bettie Davis is [email protected]

6. Final Exams: We will conduct those as already scheduled on our school calendar; for Seniors and 7th – 11th graders.

7. Graduation 2020: Seniors will graduate upon completion of their Libertas course work, including the Senior Thesis, which we be conducted via Zoom live. Plans are pending for our commencement ceremony. We will notify our Seniors and their parents when we have more information regarding a graduation ceremony.

Additionally, the Libertas Christian School Board met via Zoom on Thursday, March 26th and began with a reflection of Psalm 46 which says . . .
“God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change,
And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea . . .
The Lord of Hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold.”

In conclusion, may you, our Libertas families and friends, be encouraged to read and reflect on the timeless principles and comforts found in both Psalm 46 and Psalm 76; they share the same historical context of the Assyrian invasion of Judah during Hezekiah’s reign. Though uncertainties abounded, the Lord’s majesty and care was still evident in those past days, even as they are today. God reigns, and we press faithfully on in Him!

Solo Deo Gloria,
Robert A. Davis
